I love my generation, not that I despise or frown on previous ones or the coming ones who’re becoming of legal age.
The last eight months have been an eye-opener. I moved back to Bangalore for my job, returning back after a year of having left, completing my engineering, staying with friends in rented accommodations and hostels. Having always been observant and preferring to listen more than talking, I noticed that my peers – hailing from across the country, from Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Bombay, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, the localites from Bangalore, Hubli, Dharwad and Belgaum, everyone, the whole lot of my batch mates, by the time it was final year, everyone was using marijuana or ganja, as its commonly known in India.
The real shock for me, came when I came back to Bangalore, two years after graduation to commence my job. The secret hushed tones, the use of code words, were gone. All my colleagues knew about it, were doing it weekly if not regularly, and when I met other people in the course of my work, for sales meeting or just business networking, everyone, literally everyone was doing it, scoring it, using joints, bongs, vapes, everything, heck, in fact many of them were growing it, not that I inquired personally.
I realized, a transformation had taken place. The millennial generation
has taken the center stage across consumer markets globally. Accounting for nearly 27% of the world’s 7.4 billion population , this generation is driving various segments within consumer markets towards rapid growth and development. India is home to a staggering cohort of 440 million strong force between the ages of 18-35, now mostly the primary wage earners of their families. Note: its improper to not consider our father’s generations who indeed are still ‘very cool’ and up to date with each and every development.
The following points below highlight why ganja, now proudly has found its way back into mainstream Indian consciousness again, for years, sifting under the eyewash, stealthily waiting to make a comeback, once enough people began to be open-minded about it, making it a key part of their lifestyle –
- The millennial generation’s favorite pastime: A prime part of colleges, ganja made the initial years of college a bliss, making everything better – camaraderie, food, digital content, movies and gaming, Our cities live it up.
- Availability: Ganja is native to India. Its one of the five scared plants as documented by the Vedas, the sacred book of the Hindu religion. Its available across the country, and supplied to the major cities by distributors to cater to the burgeoning demand for recreational marijuana in Indian cities. Although the quality can be better, many Indians do not care about it as long as it gives them a high. A section of high society who have the resources to take matters into their own hands, do so.
- The Internet: A revolution heralded by falling smartphone and data prices have pushed information and porn accessibility to never before seen levels, helping smartphone savvy youngsters to watch content that showcase marijuana and drug themed content
- Relatively cheaper than Alcohol and Tobacco: Although the jury is out on this fact, ganja is cheaper than alcohol and tobacco from the cost per intoxication level perspective.
The bottom line is that, I in no way am promoting or discouraging the development of the marijuana culture, especially when its users and proponents have become so open about its usage, their peers on speed dial, huddled together after a long day of work or simply seeking to better their immediate feelings. Everything in life, needs moderation, and until you aren’t harming anyone through your usage of any substance, personally or professionally, there really is no cause of bother.
